Source. The Execution of Emperor Maximillan is a series of three large paintings depicting the killing of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian in Edouard Manet, the painter, also produced a smaller sketch and lithium on the same subject.
The emotional drawing shows a firing squad pointing riffles at the emperor and shooting him at close range. Captured in May by nationalist Mexican and Republican forces, Maximilian and two of his generals were executed by firing squad on 19 June that year.
Manet was outraged by the death of Maximilian, who was widely viewed as a victim of Napoleon III’s political ambition and incompetence, and decided the execution merited artistic treatment on an epic scale.
